1. Was insulin shock therapy a viable clinical treatment?
The insulin shock therapy is not the most viable treatment because it had a negative effect on memory, and it caused daily pass-outs and unconsciousness on John Nash over a long period of time. Moreover, the process of insulin shock was very painful and extremely unsafe. It causes brain damage and people who take it are prone to the risk of death and brain damage.
2. Was John Nash an unusual case, or do you think that many schizophrenic patients can be taught to function in society with without medication?
I believe that medication is a necessity within the society, especially to people who suffer from schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is an illness where you need to soothe and relieve the condition of the patients. Peer theraphy and socializing helps a lot, but it does not completely cures the illness and therefore need to continuously offer medication to them. A person cannot diminish the symptoms of the illness if they do not utilize the medications.
3. What are the dangers and/or advantages of this type of treatment (re: insulin shock therapy)?
Some of the dangers include, as stated in the previous question, brain damage and memory loss. Some of the advantages are that this treatment is sometimes very effective and does indeed cures the patients, despite the terrible side effects that it is prone to bring.
4. What is the difference between the treatment of schizophrenia in 1960-1970 and today?
during the year 1960-1979, the medications included drugs that were anti-psychotic in order for the patients to become more "active" and "independent", such as the insulin shock therapy. However, since that treatment was banned due to the terrible consequences. medications today include drugs and therapy.
5. What are the various types of schizophrenia? Which would you consider the worst case to have? The least worst? Explain why for each.
There are many different and various types of schizophrenia. Some of these include disorganization, paranoia, residual, undifferentiated, and Catatonic. I think that the "best" type of Schizophrenia is undifferentiated schizophrenia because the symptoms are not as severe as the other schizophrenia and is curable to an extent. On the other hand, the worst type of schizophrenia is Paranoia schizophrenia because first of all, the symptom for this type is the most severe and the most incurable. People who suffer from Paranoia Schizophrenia hears voices in their head, and this is almost impossible to cure.
6. What treatments are being pioneered today for schizophrenia?
Today, medications are being pioneered to stop the "voices in the head" which sometimes even command the person affected by the illness what to do. Therapy is one of the methods that helps to diminish the effects of the schizophrenia.
